Nevada EcoNet presents environmental awards

Nevada EcoNet presented five “Golden Pinecone” awards to individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions toward sustaining and improving the natural neveconet.jpgenvironment of the Truckee Meadows. This is the 21st year for the Pinecone Ball and awards celebration. Nominations are accepted at Nevada EcoNet all year round. Minden girl turns horse-training entrepreneur

Loagan Furry gently slides her boot into the stirrup, lifts up and holds her body close to the horse’s head. She drops back down. She repeats the gentle movement. clip_image001

She steps up again, this time swinging her leg over the saddle and smiles.

Her father stands nearby, looking on.

“This horse damn-near killed her two weeks ago,” Matt Furry said.

Loagan Furry is only 17, but already has a leg up on most teenagers. The Minden girl graduated early from high school to start her own horse training ranch and film a reality television show about her trials as a cowgirl entrepreneur. Read full story:

Douglas schools to develop energy projects

Douglas County School District announced that it will develop a district-wide series of energy clip_image001services projects designed to save energy and maintenance costs and take advantage of limited funding options.Quantcast The projects were chosen following a financial grade audit of the district’s schools and administrative buildings implemented in February 2008 by Ameresco Inc., an energy services company regionally based in Nevada.

As solar cell tests continue, company lines up first users

Snowpeak Energy Inc. is nearing a milepost in its battle to bring to market a solar cell one-tenth the size of existing solar-cell products with 10 times the power.

Working from suites at Airport Gardens in Reno, Chief Executive Officer Dick Kelsey and James Parker, the company’s chief science officer, test models both in the lab and in the sun — on the building’s roof.

They’re experimenting with a lens array, solar cells tilted an angles to more efficiently capture the sun’s energy.

They expect to have a prototype of their Suncatcher in another two months, says Kelsey. The selling point: “Amortized over 10 years, we’ll be less expensive than the power company.”

Parker, who holds a doctorate in computing science, acknowledges the math is difficult, and the product hasn’t made it out of the lab. Read full story:

Forum purpose

To give Tribal members the tools and support they need to succeed as entrepreneurs and business owners

The Forum will focus on a key component to the Washoe Tribe’s economic and business development strategy - the active support for Tribal members in starting and building their own businesses.  The Tribe’s Economic and Business Development Working Group has been strengthening its relationship with SBA, EDA, and other supporting agencies, and will be working to connect Tribal members with the resources available through these agencies to build their businesses and take advantage of the many opportunities and programs for Tribal member-owned and -operated businesses.

Who should participate and how much does it cost

Community Forum is free for all Tribal members (including Elders and youth) from the Stewart, Carson, Dresslerville, and Woodfords Communities and the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, as well as Tribal members who live off-reservation, interested in starting or growing their own businesses and learning about the free resources and opportunities available to them. A free lunch will be provided to all Tribal members attending

Tribal members will learn more about selected Washoe Tribal enterprises which are currently or which anticipate employing Tribal members or which may assist Tribal members in growing their own businesses.
